One important thing is that science is not only about big discoveries: sometimes for one big discovery that makes the headlines or for one Nobel prize winner, there are many, many people that worked together on this question and helped the winner to get to his discovery. Maybe he got his idea by chatting with someone else about his work, maybe he didn’t know how to design the experience to test his idea so he needed help… In the end, out of thousands and thousands of scientists, only one will get the Nobel prize. But it does not mean that what the others do is useless!
In science, you should always be interested about your work, even if maybe it is not Nobel prize material! So I really like the way you phrased your question. I think the most interesting thing I have found out about stars is a new way to observe them, even if they are very very far and faint in the sky!
