There are certainly planets that are similar to the Earth but so far we haven’t found any that is exactly like it. Since astronomers have started looking for planets outside of our Solar System, we’ve found around 4000 of them but we think that there could be hundreds of billions of them in our Milky Way galaxy! In fact we give these far away planets a special name – exoplanets!

Some of those exoplanets would be made up of rock like the Earth, others might be roughly the same size as our planet and some might also orbit a star that is like the Sun. What we really want to know though is are there any exoplanets that could have the right conditions (have a temperature that’s not too hot or too cold, have the right kind of air, have liquid water and so on) for life to survive. At the moment, we haven’t any planets like that making the Earth very special.
