I started as a PhD student 13 years ago. But a year before I started doing my first research during the last year at the university, so I can say that they are at least 14 years doing science.
However, I think that since I was a child I began to wonder how things worked around me and did some experiments at home with a kit called “Quimicefa” … So I am scientist since then? What do you think?
I started my PhD in 2013, and I think that’s when I started thinking of myself as a scientist – so that would be about six years now! Before that I was studying science at school and at university though, so I was learning about a lot of science, and doing some experiments of course, but I think I was still more of a student than a scientist at that point.
I guess I’ve only been a “professional” scientist for 6 months but I’ve been working in science for a lot longer! I studied for four years at university and then worked as a science communicator for 6 years after that. I personally think that I’ve always been a scientist, even when I was at school. I was always trying to find out how things work by experimenting and testing things out.
I was an Explainer at the Science Museum and an Astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. I presented science shows and planetarium shows, taught courses, wrote newspaper articles, recorded podcasts and videos and gave interviews on TV and radio. It was great fun!

Awesome! What sort of stuff did you do as a science communicator?
